A History of Liège
City, Capital, Metropolis
For centuries, Liège has been invested with many virtues (“fiery”, rebel, resistant, but also warm and broad-minded) linked to its captivating and turbulent history. If we go back in time, the first traces of man in Liège date back to the prehistory, although the 2nd-century roman villa on the banks of the Meuse River – the “vital artery” – testifies to the long life of the city.

Today, the many major works written on the history of Liège – the principality and the city – during the past century have all run out of print. Liège, the Romanesque land, sibling of France, capital city of a bilingual millennial State, member of the Holy Roman Empire, truly deserved a book that matched its rich history. This superb publication edited by Bruno Demoulin and written by a team of professors is published on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the University of Liège.

Built chronologically from the prehistory and ending with today’s urban renewal, the book offers unprecedented historic insight into the city and its region. Moreover, it presents the fruit of reflections on today’s institutional stakes and the fortunate place of the city at the heart of Europe, which will contribute to secure its promising future.
This overall study proves an ideal opportunity to showcase Liège’s heritage through multiple illustrations, period documents, reproductions of pieces by the many artists from Liège and a collection of photographs specifically produced for this project.
