Since its inaugural installation in 1893, the Venice Biennale has become an essential landmark in the art exhibition season. Showcasing the work of leading contemporary artists from around the globe, the Biennale reflects the state of international art and culture through cutting edge compositions and constructions. This year’s event, with the theme Viva Arte Viva, features 120 artists, 84 National Participants and additional installations and events at locations in and around Venice.

In an interview with artnet, curator Christine Macel explains what to expect at this year's edition opening next week (May 13th) with the theme Viva Arte Viva. Macel states that she "wants to redesign a hierarchy in which art and artists come first."
