Schizophrenia? Synesthesia? Lead poisoning? The hypotheses of what maladies plagued the famed Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh are too numerous to count. The Van Gogh Museum’s current exhibition “On the Verge of Insanity – Van Gogh and His Illness” and its accompanying catalogue seek to explore these various diagnoses to get to the bottom of what might have ailed the tragic artist. The catalogue, packed with illustrations and engaging research, will be a substantial addition to van Gogh scholarship. The exhibition is on view until 25 September 2016. Buy the catalogue here.
